Avs fall to St. Louis Blues 5-3 after hot start

ST. LOUIS (KDVR) – The Colorado Avalanche hit the ice hard and scored two goals in the first three minutes of the game, but the St. Louis Blues rallied back and won 5-3 on Saturday afternoon.

Cale Makar opened it for the Avalanche with a power play goal a little over a minute and a half before the start. Gabriel Landeskog received a wrap-around pass from Makar to take him past Jordan Binnington.

The Blues returned with three goals midway through the first half to take the lead of the competition. Ryan O’Reilly scored two goals and Ivan Barbashev put the starting gate past Devan Dubnyk, just over two minutes.

Nathan MacKinnon scored the only second half goal to tie it. The teams played a north-south multi-turn game on either side of the ice.

Mike Hoffman scored a 5-on-3 in the third half at 11:19 a.m. O’Reilly earned a hat trick for the game with an empty nice at 6:25 pm.

The teams meet on Monday evening for the last time of the season. The Avalanche secured a spot in the Stanley Cup Playoffs by beating the Blues on Thursday night. The Blues are battling to finish last in the Honda West Division with the Arizona Coyotes.
