Celebrate National Pet Month with these St. Louis events
Did you know April is national pet month and is filled with national pet-related days? We’ve rounded up some of the ways families in St. Louis can celebrate or honor their pets this month. And check out each day’s celebrations below:
- National Hug Your Dog Day, April 10th
- National Pet Day, April 11th
- National Adopt a Shelter Dog Day, April 30th
- Animal Cruelty Week, April 21-27
- National Children’s and Pets Day, April 26th
Take your dog downtown. Two dog-related events are held at St. Louis Union Station. The Purina Incredible Dog Team will be performing at the Purina Performance Plaza in Union Station on Friday April 2nd at 2:00 PM and 4:00 PM. The family will enjoy watching some canines of different breeds jump, jump, and run obstacles on an agility class. Your trainers share fun facts about dogs and tips for training your own furry friends back home. Union Station has also partnered with Kennelwood Pet Resorts to host a fun family event on April 10th from 11am to 3pm. Activities include a photo booth with props to take a fun picture of your pooch, plus free samples from Fro Pup. Teach your pet a new trick and reserve a free time slot for an on-site trick class. You can also reserve a free pet training assessment provided by the Academy for Professional Dog Trainers.
Bring your pet a photo with a firefighter. On Saturday, April 3, at 12 noon, the St. Charles Central County Fire Department is holding a free drive through event where your pet will be photographed with a fire truck. They even take your photo for you and give your family digital access to the pictures.
Look at the cats and dogs in need. Consider donating dog food, blankets, leashes, boxes, cleaning supplies, or cash to Yuppy Puppies Forever Inc. This O’Fallon-based animal rescue company specializes in rehabilitation of dogs whose owners have died and helps fund surgeries for dogs with special needs. You can also contribute to St. Louis Pet Rescue, a nonprofit group that focuses on rescuing pets from local animal control posts and neglecting situations. You have an Amazon wish list that your family can shop at to take care of their cats and dogs in need before they find their home forever.
Give them gourmet. Treats Unleashed offers a range of natural foods and treats for cats and dogs. You can even get dog biscuits and cookies personalized with your pet’s name. The bakery also sponsors a fundraising program to give back to various pet organizations in the community.
Take the whole family for ice cream – including your pup. Clementine’s Creamery recently partnered with Mixed Mutt Creamery of Kansas City to offer all-natural ice cream to dogs. Puppy cups come in three flavors and cost $ 5. They are available at all four Clementine locations.
Adopt a Pet! If you have something to add to your family, consider giving a cat or dog a forever home. The Humane Society of Missouri recently celebrated its 150th anniversary. They will help you find the right pet for you. Learn more about their humane practices and frequently asked questions here.
