Officials visit St. Louis jails to check out conditions

ST. LOUIS (AP) – New St. Louis Mayor Cori Bush and several other officials met with inmates in both of the city’s prisons on Saturday to review conditions and highlight reform efforts. Mayor Tishaura Jones said she was particularly concerned about complaints she had heard about poor quality food and lack of access to medical treatment in the city’s prisons. Jones has pledged to close the medium security prison known as the Workhouse, which has often been criticized for being unsanitary and unsafe. Their budget proposal on Wednesday included calls for closure by July 1st. Bush said they were told stories of human litter on the ground and seen inadequate health facilities in prisons.
