Southwest (LUV) Announces a Major Summer Service Expansion

Southwest Airlines Co.. LUV announced a major service expansion for the summer travel period. The airline will begin flights to Myrtle Beach, SC. Connect Austin, TX with multiple new destinations and roll out non-stop services in popular locations.

Andrew Watterson, Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer of Southwest said, “We are continuing to adapt our flight schedule with additional flights to meet tighter demand for vacation destinations, and are fundamentally adding to our map to position our network for the future . “

Service to Myrtle Beach

Effective May 23, 2021, Southwest will connect Myrtle Beach to Baltimore, MD. Chicago, IL and Nashville, TN. In addition, starting May 29, the airline will fly non-stop to Myrtle Beach from Dallas, TX and Pittsburgh, PA. These services are only available on Saturdays.

Starting June 6, the airline will connect Myrtle Beach to Atlanta, GA. Columbus, OH and Indianapolis, IN.

Southwest believes the Myrtle Beach service will appeal to customers because of its low rates and free policy for two checked bags, which could include a golf bag.

Austin additional services

Southwest will offer nonstop flights from Austin to 37 cities this summer. Some of these destinations include Sacramento, CA (starting May 9); Burbank, CA; Miami, Florida; Minneapolis / St. Paul, MN; Orange County, CA and Salt Lake City, UT. These services, with the exception of the Sacramento service, are scheduled to begin June 6th. Starting on the same day, the airline will also be offering non-stop flights from Austin to Destin / Fort Walton Beach, FL on weekends.

More non-stop services for the summer

Starting May 9, Southwest will begin daily service between Denver, CO and Richmond, VA. Las Vegas and Palm Springs, CA; and Miami and St. Louis, MO. Some other services include Nashville, TN-Long Island, NY and Chicago-Portland, ME.

Other airlines are increasing the service for summer travel

United Airlines UAL announced an expanded May timetable that includes the addition of 26 new routes between Midwestern cities such as Cleveland, OH. Cincinnati, OH and Milwaukee, WI, as well as popular destinations like Hilton Head, SC; Pensacola, FL; and Portland.

Earlier this month Spirit Airlines SAVE announced plans to roll out services in Pensacola, FL. As of June 2021, the airline will connect Pensacola to seven destinations, namely Columbus, OH; Indianapolis, IN; Louisville, KY; Austin, TX; Dallas-Fort Worth, TX; Kansas City, MO and St. Louis, MO.

Additionally, Alaska Air GroupThe ALK subsidiary Alaska Airlines will introduce four new routes between California and Montana in the summer.
