St. Louis moves to the front in tech-job growth | David Nicklaus
Some people in tech hotbeds like Silicon Valley, Seattle, or Northern Virginia have to scratch their heads about what’s going on in St. Louis.
Granted, the tech industry here is tiny by comparison, but the statistics show that St. Louis is increasingly emerging as a growth market. St. Louis is growing faster than any other major city in the country, according to Dice.com, a technology recruiting website.
Bureau of Labor Statistics figures confirm that Missouri led the nation in percentage growth in a key category, computer systems design, for the past year. (The BLS doesn’t have any specific subway-level data on the tech industry, but St. Louis accounts for roughly 40 percent of the state’s economy. If Missouri is doing well, it’s a good bet that St. Louis will be a leader is.)
Then there is the anecdotal evidence. Boeing announced last week that it will develop an information technology “center of excellence” here that will move up to 600 jobs from Seattle.
