  • Fans of the Kounter culture have a new place in Songbird, one of the most exciting openings of the month.

That month, as the virus soared and St. Louis County reintroduced food restrictions, the area’s dining scene continued to hold on to the fingernails – a situation made even more difficult by the plummeting temperatures that made alfresco dining an endurance sport to have. Even in such dire circumstances, the industry continues to find a way, as the numerous openings in November suggest. Quincy Street Bistro, the famous Princeton Heights spot that closed in 2018, found a second life when it reopened this month. Songbird, from the hugely talented duo behind Kounter Kulture, opened their doors at the Grove and, perhaps most notably, Brennan’s beloved Central West End water level finally opened the doors to its new location just 45 paces from the old site after being dated expelled from the ever-expanding St. Louis Chess Club. Not all of the news was good, however. Giovanni’s Kitchen, a lightly dressed version of the elegant old school Giovanni’s on the Hill, closed the shop in Ladue, making way for the Pasta House Company (moving off Delmar Boulevard), and Edgewild Restaurant & Winery two of them closed its three locations . After all, a Fine Swine, New Baden’s pre-eminent grill restaurant, had to close and bring with it the restaurant dreams of the talented David Sitdham, who left his high profile restaurant marketing performance to grill all day. “We fought the good fight in those crazy times but just can’t go on any longer,” said Stidham in a Facebook post announcing the closure. It’s sad evidence of the current state of business, but hey, at least we have diamond-dusted chicken wings to get us through.
