St. Louis Restaurant Openings and Closings: September 2020
The note on Cousin Hugo’s Bar & Grill’s website says it all: “Victims of the COVID-19 economy. Thank you for 80 years of memories.”
The name Cousin Hugo may not ring, but you’ve passed it a million times. The pub is a small, house-like building on Laclede Station Road in the foreground of “Rocket Ship Park” (yes, it’s technically called Deer Creek Park, but who actually calls it that?). It had been in operation for eight decades and probably could have lasted longer had it not been for the terrible horror of the COVID-19 outbreak.
Tom’s Bar & Grill is another Hugo’s cousin – more of an institution than a watering hole. This Central West End bar was one of the constants you would pass by if you rolled down Euclid. Now it’s gone, a sad reminder that younger, nimbler restaurants can use words like “pivot” or “moving to a new model”, long-standing spots, especially bars that exist as personal hangouts, but don’t have that luxury and do are on the verge of collapse. In a city with an embarrassment of wealth in this department, it is a worrying sign of what is to come.
The news wasn’t all bad this month, however. Lazy Tiger, the highly anticipated third retreat concept from the Gastropub and Yellowbelly folks, opened up the avenue of Tom’s as a bastion of cocktail culture. O + O Pizza heated up their ovens at Webster Grove and offered us another wonderful pizza option. Lucky Accomplice, Shift Chef Logan Ely’s second restaurant, welcomed its first diners to Fox Park this month.
When asked what it’s like to open up during a pandemic, Ely said he’s trying not to think about it. “I can’t worry about things that I can’t change or control. I can just lower my head and work.”
Words to live by in these challenging times.
