What are the best cities for BBQ (barbecue, barbeque) in America?

In the new ranking, Memphis is the 47th best city in America for grilling.

MEMPHIS, Tennessee – nationally – and internationally – Memphis is known for Elvis, FedEx, the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, but apparently not for grilling, even with the Memphis World Championship grilling competition in full swing back in May at Tom Lee Park in downtown Memphis.

According to Chef’s Pencil, Memphis is not only not one of the top 5 best cities for barbecuing in the US, but also ranks 47th. The Memphis Grizzlies have shared their feelings about it on Twitter.

The following is from ChefsPencil.com:

It’s May, and for Americans, that means it’s National Barbecue Month. Established in 1963 by the Barbecue Council, National Barbecue Month celebrates this popular pastime that is deeply rooted in American culture.

Few other subjects lead to such heated debates as humble crickets. How to grill great or where to enjoy the best of the country can quickly lead to a very heated conversation.

Knowing these debates would be roaring around the grill in the coming weeks, we turned to TripAdvisor to find out which cities are the best to enjoy a fantastic BBQ. We analyzed the TripAdvisor ratings of all barbecue areas in the 75 largest cities in the country and rated the cities based on their average rating.

We have also ranked cities based on the number of barbecue spots per capita as well as the number of top rated barbecue spots (rating 4.5 and above).

In total, our team analyzed 2,020 places that have grilled dishes on their menu and that had at least 5 reviews. From the final ranking, we excluded cities with fewer than 10 grill restaurants within their city limits (grill areas outside the city limits were not included in our analysis.)

  • New Orleans (1st) and Oklahoma City (2nd) are among the best cities for grilling in America.

  • With a score of 4.25, Charlotte, Wichita, and Virginia Beach are in 3rd place.

  • Anchorage, Plano, and Boston are America’s worst grilling cities.

  • Of the 75 largest cities in the country, Orlando, St. Louis, and Honolulu have the most barbecues per capita.

  • Chicago, Los Angeles, and Austin are the cities with the highest number of top-rated BBQ spots (4.5 stars and higher).

  • San Antonio, Houston, and Memphis have the highest number of low-rated BBQ areas (rated 3 stars and lower).

  • The Blue Door Smokehouse in Lexington, Kentucky is the best grill restaurant in the country and the best-rated 5-star grill place.

  • Wichita and Columbus are the top rated cities in the Midwest.

  • Seattle and Portland are the top rated cities in the west.

  • Newark is the best place to have a BBQ in the northeast.

With an average customer rating of 4.31 (out of 5), New Orleans is one of America’s best barbecue city, closely followed by Oklahoma City barbecue power plant. Third place is a perfect marriage between Wichita, Charlotte, and Virginia Beach.

New Orleans hasn’t always been a mecca for barbecue lovers, but the local BBQ scene is now very competitive, according to Brett Anderson, a local restaurant reviewer. And that has not gone unnoticed. With only one exception, all barbecue areas in town received good marks (4 and above) from customers. The Joint and BB King’s Blues Club are two of the local favorites with over 1,000 reviews with an average score of 4.5 (out of 5).

Oklahoma City doesn’t need a presentation as it’s known for some of the best grilled dishes in the country. All but two of the 33 grill places listed on TripAdvisor scored high, including some restaurants with a perfect 5-star rating.

Wichita is a foodie’s paradise and BBQ is one of its trademarks. The city’s restaurants averaged 4.25, just below Oklahoma City (4.26) and well ahead of rival Kansas City (4.04). It’s one of the safest bets in the country to go out to eat as all but one grill restaurant have had great ratings (4 and above).

Charlotte has made leaps in the BBQ game in recent years and customers could no longer agree. With an average rating of 4.25, Charlotte joins Wichita and Virginia Beach as the third best city for grilling in the US. It is way ahead of local rivals Raleigh (score 4.0) and Greensboro (score 3.95).

Midwood Smokehouse and Mac’s Speed Shop are two of Charlotte’s most popular BBQ places, each with over 1,400 reviews and an average rating of 4.5.

Not so long ago, Virginia was one of the biggest barbecue destinations in the country, says Joe Haynes, author of Virginia Barbecue. It should be back on the list, according to TripAdvisor as Virginia Beach ranks 3rd in the nation for top rated BBQ areas. All but one of the local BBQ areas received ratings of 4 and up (out of 5), which means you can’t go wrong with a Virginia Beach BBQ.

It’s not that you can’t find a great BBQ in places like Anchorage, Plano, Boston or San Antonio, but you have to make really good choices or you might not like what you get. In Anchorage and Plano, you step into an average grill restaurant rather than a great one as there are more places 3.5 stars and below than places 4 stars and above. In Boston, the odds are on your side, but not by much.

San Antonio and Houston are surprising entries among the worst grilling cities in the nation. Both cities are known for their amazing food culture, which may have something to do with this poor overall rating.

The two cities have some of the most barbecue areas in the nation: Houston is actually the first, while San Antonio is the third. You can grill amazingly in both Houston and San Antonio, which is reflected in the high number of highly rated BBQ spots – 67 in Houston and 50 in San Antonio. But there are also many places with low to average ratings. More choice doesn’t always mean better choice, so do your research beforehand.

The density of grill restaurants in a city reveals a lot about the local grill culture. Sure, it also helps to have tens of millions of tourists each year supporting a large number of restaurants, but tourism alone wasn’t a big part of our ranking.

Orlando ranks first with one grill restaurant per 5,325 residents, followed by St. Louis with one grill restaurant per 6,500 residents. Perhaps this is not at all surprising, given that St. Louis reportedly consumes more barbecue sauce per capita than any other city in the nation.

Top tourist attractions Honolulu and Las Vegas rank 3rd and 4th, while Nashville and Memphis, both famous for their barbecue culture, rank 5th and 6th.

Size matters, but it’s not the only factor that helped these cities get to the top of the charts for the highest number of world-class grill restaurants, defined as restaurants with an average rating of 4.5 stars and above.

Chicago had 31 top grill restaurants, Los Angeles 30, while Austin came third with 29, ahead of Nashville and Houston.

Best cities for world class grilling in America

There are many restaurants with a perfect 5 rating, so we used the number of reviews as a differentiating factor. After all, the consistency of offering first-class service and high-quality food is the key to success in the highly competitive restaurant industry.

The Blue Door Smokehouse in Lexington, Kentucky is the best grill restaurant in the country and the best-rated 5-star grill place. Konan’s BBQ in Tampa, FL is the second best BBQ restaurant in the country, while the Japanese Niwa BBQ in Dallas, TX ranks 3rd.
